Makeup Through the Ages
In the 70′s, striking eye-effects began the movement towards a more natural effect. Along with the natural hair of the 70′s, came a natural look in skin and cosmetics. Earlier decades had made the dead white complexion, the flawless matte of a movie star skin, and the rosy blush of innocence fashionable through the magic of foundation. In the 70′s, it was cool to resemble to surfers at Venice Beach: an all over tan, a golden glow around the face, and minimal looking make up were the things to strive for. Bronzers made an appearance, making fake tanning fluids turn thousands of young women bright orange.
Fast forwarding to the 80′s, eye makeup was described as” Big, bold, and bright”- says and editor of makeupartist.com. First and foremost there was just way too much makeup. Girls of the decade literally “painted” their faces on. The two defining makeup elements in the 80′s face were bold eyes and blush meant to accentuate the cheek bones. The more noticeable the eye shadow and the heavier the blush, the better you looked as far as 80′s fashion was concerned. If your face didn’t look halfway clownish, you hadn’t quite achieved the look yet. From the natural look in the 70′s, to pancaking makeup in the 80′s, there seems to be a crazy difference when going into the 90′s.
The makeup look of the 90′s was the “grunge look,” inspired by the music of the time period. This look of disheveled makeup and hair was not supposed to look pretty or glamorous, rather the opposite. Mid ’90s makeup saw a return to pretty with the rise of neutral and brown-toned makeup with matte skin and lips, while the bare-faced, no makeup look of the late ’90s was popularized in perfume ads of the time.Throughout the 90′s, the dramatic makeup soon went out of style. Soon after, the natural look came back from the 70′s.
Now entering a new century, our generation has been exposed to more advanced makeup, that can completely change the appearance of a person. Microscopic wrinkle creams and waterproof cover up is only a tiny addition to what women put on their face. This pattern of a natural look to an extreme makeover has been going on for more then 30 years. Who knows what kind of makeup will be introduced in the near future.

It is crazy to think that 30-40 years later, we are STILL extremely focused on our physical appearance. It seems to me that in 10 years, no one will focus on their natural beauty and more on how much makeup they can apply to cover up any of thier natural flaws.

It’s so true, so many women try to cover up any flaw they have. It’s pathetic to hear about all the new anti wrinkle creams that 60 year old women use to make them look like they were 20 again.

I agree. I think the fascination with trying to look 20 years old when you’re forty or fifty is ridiculous. Why are there no articles on women who look great for having wrinkles or having scars? I think the fashion industry needs to embrace aging and all the beauty that comes with it. Women need to be proud of their age and show it!

Exactly, women who are old and get plastic surgery are gross. Aging is a part of life. no one can reverse time on their skin and have it look natural.
